Project information
Goals of the project
The aim of the project is to provide learners with a competence in the languages Turkish, Finnish and Hungarian. A computer based training was developed which comprises learning materials integrated in a rich learning environment. The learning units are easily accessible from the project website or available on a CD. Every learner can find their own learning path through the material, no matter where and when.
New method
The product aims at presenting self-study materials about the three languages Finnish, Hungarian and Turkish. The method stresses structural similarities within three languages such as vowel harmony, lack of gender, agglutinative typology. The basic module makes it possible to learn three languages at the same time by a comparative approach.
Content of the learning units
The main learning part consists of two sections, the ‘text section’ and the ‘picture section’. In the ‘text part’, topic based main learning texts and dialogues are presented. The ‘picture part' will serve as a visual aid about what’s going on in the text.
In the ‘teacher feature’ part the learner finds detailed information about the grammar, the vocabulary and the phrases which are used in the main learning texts. Moreover, this component includes the English translation of the text.
Another component covers the ‘similarities’ between the languages. The language-learning materials are prepared by taking into account the structural similarities presented in the main texts and possibly other similarities.
The parts ’reference grammar’ and ‘general dictionary’ provide the learner with an overview of the whole grammar and of the entire vocabulary of all presented chapters.
Then there is the ‘exercise section’ which is designed to test the learner’s skills and knowledge about the information given on that specific page. There are cloze tests, multiple choice questions, listening exercises etc.
The ‘cultural tips’ section generally presents culture related information about what is dealt with in the presentation pages. Here the learner finds information in order to get familiar with the cultures of the three countries.
The last unit comprises exercises for self-tests and short video sequences about all situations presented in the previous chapters.
The language units consist of material for the A1 – A2 level.
Target group
With the NEWAP e-Learning module we address European citizens who are interested in achieving basic knowledge of the three languages Finnish, Turkish and Hungarian. They should have an interest in language learning and culture in general.
The approach is based on the assumption that language learning should be intimately bound to cultural awareness.
